Thousands in Mirpur in fresh eviction fear
Staff Correspondent
The army has taken fresh initiatives to evict a few thousand people, majority of whom are Hindu, from Chakuli enclave inside the Mirpur Cantonment in Dhaka. The army will launch the drive this morning against the allegedly illegal occupants of the land allocated to the Ministry of Defence, sources said. A notice from the station headquarters of Dhaka Cantonment was served yesterday to Pallabi Police Station, the engineering corps of the army and other army departments concerned for sending two platoons of force to the Chakuli enclave. The engineering corps was also asked to send excavators and bulldozers. The army earlier attempted an eviction drive in the same area on June 5 but it was suspended following resistance from the locals, who claim that they inherited the land from their forefathers. They said around 3,000 people have been living in the Chakuli enclave for over a century. A number of temples are also located there.
