Journalist Hedayet Hossain Morshed passes away


Noted journalist and former director of Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB) Hedayet Hossain Morshed passed away early yesterday at the age of 67 due to kidney related complications at Kidney Hospital and Dialysis Centre in the capital.

During his long illustrious career, Morshed worked with various prestigious news organisations including the now defunct Dainik Bangla (Dainik Pakistan), the Paygam, the Azad and the Purbadesh, BSS reports.

After serving Dainik Bangla, he joined the PIB as its director and worked there until retirement.

Morshed was also a popular columnist and worked as a freelance journalist for a long time.

Morshed hailed from Barisal. He left behind his wife Hosne Ara Arju, headmistress of Nazrul Shikkhalaya, daughter Risat Mohajabin Kanta and a host of relatives and admirers.

His first namaz-e-janaza was held at the Jatiya Press Club, which a large number of journalists, educationists, intellectuals and cultural activists attended. The second one was held at the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque. Later, he was laid to rest at the Azimpur graveyard.

Different organisations and its leaders sent condolences to the bereaved family members.

Law and Information Adviser Mainul Hosein expressed his profound shock at the death of Morshed and conveyed his heartfelt sympathy to the members of the bereaved family and prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul.

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia condoled the death of Morshed and said he was a fearless journalist whose contribution would be remembered by the nation with reverence.

In a separate message, BNP Secretary General Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan also expressed deep shock at Morshed's death and conveyed his condolence to the bereaved family.

Jatiya Press Club President Shawkat Mahmud and General Secretary Kamal Uddin Shabuj expressed shock and conveyed their condolences to Morshed's family members.

President of Jatiya Gonotrantrik League MA Jalil, Vice-President Jahanara Begum,

Muktijoddha Paribar Kalyan Sangsad chairman, executive secretary, Muktijoddha Palli Society president, general secretary, Kendrio Khelaghar Asar chairman, general secretary, its Dhaka City Committee president and general secretary, and Dakkhin Bangla Jubo Kalyan Samiti also expressed deep shock at the death of the noted journalist and conveyed their condolences to the bereaved family members.
