Dhighinala UNO held for bribery

The army-led joint forces yesterday arrested an upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) and two of his staff for their alleged involvement in taking bribes from a timber trader.

The arrestees are Mohammad Muniruzzaman Khan, UNO of Dhighinala upazila, his clerks Joty Prashad Chakma and Reva Chakma.

Dhighinala police sources said acting on a tip off, the joint forces led by Major Khairul Islam raided the UNO office around 1:30pm and arrested Muniruzzaman, Joty and Reva in connection with taking Tk 2,500 as bribe from Zouth Permit, the timber trader, for giving the trader unauthorised facilities regarding forest wood trade.

The joint forces, taking the UNO with them, searched his residence and recovered Tk 88,770, a cartridge, foreign wine and 32 planks of teak, source said.

The joint forces handed the detained UNO over to Dhighinala police later on, source said.
