Rajshahi University (RU) authorities formed a 20-member committee headed by the vice chancellor to convince the University Grants Commission (UGC) and approve the salaries of more than five hundred controversially appointed teachers, officials and employees. The committee members will meet UGC chairman today and present real picture of additional recruitment in the university, a committee member said. Earlier, UGC decided that it would not sanction budget for salaries of more than five hundred RU teachers, officials and employees for their recruitment was not made as per UGC rule. The committee members include pro-BNP, pro-Awami League and pro-Jamaat teachers, syndicate members, faculty deans, department chairmen and other high administrative officials, campus sources said. However, pro-AL teachers of RU yesterday declared that they will withdraw their names from the committee and have no involvement with the committee. 'We expressed no-confidence with the committee', Prof Abdus Sobhan, a syndicate member and pro-Awami teacher, told newsmen. When contacted, RU VC Prof Altaf Hossain told the reporters that "We included teachers of all levels and opinions like syndicate members, dean and other university high authorities to meet UGC chairman, because it is not a political issue." "We will present the real picture of the university to the UGC and request them for sanctioning the budget," he added. Pro-AL teachers earlier met the chairman of UGC and demanded exemplary punishment of those who were involved in mass recruitment, corruption, irregularities, nepotism and violation of the University Act at RU during the BNP-Jamaat rule. A two-member budget-inspection team of UGC finance committee found that most of the controversial recruitments were made without UGC permission and not as per the rules and regulation formed by UGC to prevent mass and political recruitment in public universities, campus sources said.
