Sayeed Ahmed felicitated


Eminent playwright Sayeed Ahmed was given a reception by the Department of Theatre and Film, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) on June 10. The event was held at the National Theatre Stage.

Eminent cultural personalities, Syed Shamsul Haque, Momotajuddin Ahmed, Ramendu Majumdar, Ataur Rahman and M Hamid discussed the life and works of the playwright, who is also an art critic of international repute. Director of the Department of Theatre and Film, Shafi Kamal, gave a welcome speech while the director general of BSA, Quamrul Hassan, ndc presided over the programme.

Sayeed Ahmed's immense contribution to Bangladeshi theatre and attaining international recognition were discussed at the event.

Ahmed was born on January 1, 1931 in Dhaka. Among his most provocative plays are Kalbela (1962), Milepost (1965), Trishnae (1968), Ek Din Protidin (1974) and Shesh Nawab (1988). His plays have also been translated into English, French, German and Italian. Ahmed received the Bangla Academy Award in 1974 and the Legion d' Honneur from the French Government in 1993. He has delivered lectures at different prestigious universities and theatre academies in Brazil, China, France, Germany, Holland, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Malaysia, Morocco, Norway, Thailand, Turkey, USA and Russia.

At the programme, Ahmed was greeted with flowers by representatives of Bangladesh Centre of the International Theatre Institute (ITI), Theatre (Baily Road), Natyachokro, Jatrashilpo Unnoyon Parishad, Nandonik Natya Shomprodaye, Desh Natok, Palakar, Genesis Theatre, Neelima Theatre, Nagorik Natya Shomprodaye, Swadhin Theatre, Aranyak, Dhaka Theatre, Theatre Art Unit, Dhaka Theatre Moncho, Nagorik Natya Dol and Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation.

The reception was followed by reading out excerpts from Sayeed's play Milepost. Aly Zaker, Ataur Rahman and Asaduzzaman Noor participated in the reading.
