Steps to be taken to free footpaths from encroachment

The government has taken some decisions to make the footpaths of Dhaka city free from encroachment and obstructions and keep them clean in order to make pedestrians' movement safe and convenient.

The decisions were taken at a meeting held at the LGRD and coopeartives ministry in the city yesterday, with local government Secretary Safar Raj Hossain in the chair.

The meeting decided that legal action, including fine, would be taken against the persons responsible for piling up construction materials on footpaths. Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) has also been asked to raise awareness in this regard.

It also decided that mobile courts would launch drives at Panthapath to make the pavements free from encroachment.

It asked the DCC to maintain contact with the Wasa all the time and take necessary steps to ensure that the Wasa pump station at Titipara is switched on as soon as it starts raining -- a step to resolve waterlogging problem in the city.

Besides, the meeting also decided to free the footpath stretching from Banani to Airport from illegal grabbers.

Chief Executive Officer of DCC Saifuddin Ahmed, joint secretary of local government division Mizanur Rahman, DCC Chief Engineer Mahedi Ali Khan and other officials were also present at the meeting.
