Criminals shoot three for toll
Staff Correspondent
Unidentified gunmen shot three people in Kafrul, Pallabi, and Shahali in the capital yesterday. The injured are Aftab Uddin, 54, a businessman of Dakkhin Kafrul, Shankar Roy, 45, a security guard of a garment factory in Pallabi, and Jewel, 30, an employee of transport service. Both were receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). Two youths went to Aftab's under-construction house in Uttar Kafrul around 11:30am and asked him to pay toll after calling their boss "Shikder" over cellphone. They also gave him the number to call. As Aftab refused to make the call, they shot him four times. In another incident, two gunmen around 7:30am shot Shankar, who was on duty at the entrance gate of a garment factory, in both his legs. The reason behind the attack could not be known immediately. Police, however, suspect the attack might be related to extortion. In Mirpur-1, Jewel was shot in a bus counter at Block C at around 11:15pm. The locals managed to catch one of the assailants named Jamal. He was carrying a revolver.
