Car thief caught red-handed

A car thief was caught red-handed while trying to speed away at Karwan Bazar area in the city in broad daylight yesterday.Some seven people were also injured as the car hit them during the thief's desperate attempt to speed away at noon. A mob chased and finally managed to catch Shohag, 25, when he got stuck at a traffic signal near the Sonargaon Hotel. The mob handed him over to the police after beating him up. The police took injured Shohag, a resident of Manipur in Mirpur, to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Abdul Quddus, driver of the white Toyota-100 car, said he was drinking water standing nearby the parked car near the Karwan Bazar Masjid Complex at around 12:40pm. But all of a sudden a man with one hand appeared there, opened the door of the car by inserting a key-like object into the lock and sped away. When the driver raised an alarm, people tried to stop the car by blocking the road with cars near the Summit Centre building but failed. The thief continued to speed away after hitting the cars, causing minor injuries to seven people, Quddus said. However, the mob finally caught the thief in front of the BSRS Bhaban, witnesses said. Quddus filed a case with Tejgoan police station in this connection. The car belongs to Bani Amin, an advocate of the Supreme Court. On April 26, a private car of The Daily Star office was stolen from the same area and the police found it at Osmani Udyan after seven days. Sources said the incidents of carjacking have increased in the capital as more than one hundred cars and motorcycles have been stolen and hijacked from different places in the last two months. Detective Branch (DB) Police said they have recovered 28 cars and motorcycles since March 21 and different police stations have also recovered several cars.
