Trial of Lobi's tax evasion case begins
MAH Salim sued again


The trial of a tax evasion case against former BNP lawmaker Ali Asgar Lobi began at a special court here yesterday.

The court recorded the statement of prosecution witness (PW) Nurul Amin, deputy tax commissioner of the National Board of Revenue (NBR).

On May 23, the NBR filed the case against Lobi for evading tax amounting to Tk 4.25 crore in fiscal year.2006-07

According to the case statement, Lobi repeatedly gave "false" information about his real income and expenditure to the Income Tax Department and did not show his income tax return. "He also used his position to conceal information about his real income," the complainant said.

On February 6, joint forces arrested Lobi at his Gulshan residence and seized Tk 9.75 crore FDR from there. Later, the Central Intelligence Cell (CIC) of NBR collected information of his different bank accounts, where they found Tk 22.25 crore.

EX-BNP MP SELIM SUED IN ANOTHER EXTORTION CASE
In Bagerhat, another extortion case was filed here yesterday against former BNP lawmaker MAH Selim and his ten associates.

Contractor Didarul Alam Babul, also Vice-President of district BNP, filed the case with Bagerhat Sadar Police Station.

Babul alleged that he gave Selim, now in jail, and his associates Tk 24.80 lakh to get the construction work of Bagerhat--Baniakhali road in 2005.

With this, four cases have been filed against MAH Selim on charges of extortion and land grabbing.

Meanwhile, joint forces arrested five accused in the latest case in a drive in the town on Thursday noon.

The arrestees are district BNP Vice-President Prof Ali Reza Babu, Organising Secretary Sheikh Nazrul Islam, Chairman of Bagerhat Chamber of Commerce and Industries Sheikh Shahed Ali Robi, BNP leader Raqibul Islam and Selim's personal staff Hasibur Rahman.

Other accused in the case are district Jubo Dal President Fakir Tariqul Islam, General Secretary Mahbubul Haq Kishore, BNP leader and Ward Commissioner Mahbubur Rahman Tutul, BNP leader Khadem Niyamoon Nasir Alap and district Sramik Dal leader Sheikh Shamsher Ali Mohan.
