JCD cadre gets 21 yrs RI in arms case

A court in Sylhet yesterday sentenced a JCD cadre to 21 years RI for possessing illegal firearms. Additional District and Sessions Judge Ferdous Ahmed also fined Iftekhar Ahmed Dinar Tk 5,000, in default to suffer RI for one year more. Fourteen years RI were given under Section 19 (KA) and seven years RI under 19 (CHA) of the Arms and Explosives Act. Both the sentences will run together. Iftekhar Ahmed Dinar, former secretary of Sylhet district Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) was arrested on March 13 this year from near his house at the city's Shahjalal Uposhahar. Later, based on his confession, a locally made revolver and two bullets were recovered from a pond in the area. Sub Inspector Abdul Hamid and Sub Inspector Humayun Kabir of Sylhet Kotwali police station framed charge against Dinar on April 2. Court sources said 13 witnesses were examined during the trial. Police said Dinar was wanted in a number of cases for his involvement in mugging, extortion and other crimes in the city.
