One killed, over 100 hurt as villagers clash in Kushtia, Faridpur


One person was killed and at least 110 people were injured, 35 of them seriously, as villagers clashed in Kushtia and Faridpur yesterday.

Ainul,40, was killed in a clash between two groups at Mahiskundi village in Kushtia Sadar upazila. Fatally injured Ainul died at Kushtia General Hospital. At least 50 people were injured as rival groups clashed there with lethal weapons, police said.

The clash was sequel to rivalry between the two groups, one led by Samir Uddin and the other led by Rahman, over possession of a land.

Quoting villages, Faridpur Sadar police said, people loyal to Samir beat labourers engaged by Rahman group to harvest paddy from the disputed land at about 10am. Five labourers were injured.

Hearing this, men loyal to Rahman rushed to the spot and were locked in a clash with the rival group.

Twenty of the critically injured were admitted to Kushtia General Hospital.

In Faridpur, at least 60 people were injured, 25 of them seriously, when two rival groups loyal to Delwar Chairman and Omar Daroga clashed at Vawal in Nagarkanda upazila.

According to police, the clash erupted at about 9 am when one Anwar of Vawal village resisted milkman Shobuz from selling milk at a local market. Protesting this, some people led by Shohid Mollah and Omar Daroga attacked Shobuz.

Twenty-five of the injured were taken to Nagarkada Upazila Health Complex and Faridpur Medical Collage Hospital. Of them, 15 were released after treatment.

On of the injured--Guzar Hossen, 60was sent to Dhaka in a critical condition police said.
