Seven killed in Thai south

Three Muslim men were shot dead by suspected separatist rebels in Thailand's restive south, where a powerful bomb later hit a market killing four people, police said yesterday.

A 24-year-old man and a 39-year-old village chief were shot and killed Sunday as they rode their motorcycles home in Narathiwat province, police said.

On Monday in the same province, suspected militants shot dead a 40-year-old traffic policeman while he was on duty.

In neighbouring Songkhla province, an explosion at a busy market killed four people and wounded 23, police said.

The bomb came one day after seven small blasts hit the popular tourist town of Hat Yai, also in Songkhla.
