Olmert nominates Peres for Israeli presidency

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said on Monday that Israel's elder statesman Shimon Peres would be his party's candidate for the largely ceremonial post of president.

"I indicated yesterday to Peres that I will put forward his candidacy for the presidency and I will do everything in my power for him to be elected and become the next head of state," Olmert told members of his Kadima party.

"The personal history of Peres is linked to that of Israel, which he helped shape... no one is identified with the state as much as him."
