Extortion Case
Barura OC, two others jailed in Comilla

Three people, including the Officer-in-Charge of Borura Police Station, were awarded four years rigorous imprisonment by a tribunal here in an extortion case on Sunday.

The Speedy Trial Tribunal also fined them Tk 10,000 each, in default, to suffer three months more in jail.

The convicts were identified as OC Rafiquddin Khan, Humayan Kabir of village Jinsar and Jahangir Alam of Pathanpara village in Barura upazila. Of them, Kabir was tried in absentia.

According to the prosecution, Jahangir demanded Tk 300 from former soldier Abdul Hai as toll when he was returning home purchasing timber for his sawmill on March 17 this year.

Later, police arrested Jahangir Alam when Abdul Hai filed an extortion case against him with Barura Police Station.

In his confessional statement Jahangir said Barura Police Station OC Rafiqul used to take share of the toll money from him through Kabir from time to time. Following his confessional statement the OC was closed.

After investigation, police submitted a charge sheet against the accused on April 17.

After examining the records and witnesses Judge M Ataul Gani pronounced the verdict.
