Govt appeals to HC to resume MiG-29 case against Hasina

The government yesterday appealed to the High Court (HC) to resume the hearing of the MiG-29 and frigate purchase graft cases filed against former premier and Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina during the four-party alliance government.The HC in 2003 stayed the proceedings of the cases following Hasina's appeals. Deputy Attorney General Golam Mohammad Chowdhury Alal submitted a petition to a HC bench, consisting Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Ataur Rahman Khan, for fixing dates for hearing on the two cases. The HC is to give its decision on the matter today. The now defunct bureau of anti-corruption filed the MiG-29 purchase scam case against the former premier and four others with Tejgaon Police Station on December 11, 2001 and the frigate purchase scam case against five people including Hasina on August 7, 2002 with the same police station. During 1996 to 2001, when Hasina was the premier, eight MiG-29 fighter planes were procured from Russia for Bangladesh Air Force. During the same period a frigate was purchased from South Korea for Bangladesh Navy. In the First Information Reports (FIR) the complainant mentioned that the government incurred a loss of Tk 447 crore buying the frigate and a loss of Tk 700 crore buying the eight MiG-29s. In 2003, charges were pressed against Hasina and six others in the MiG-29 scam case and five people in the frigate scam case and charge sheets were submitted before the court in this regard.
