Govt to assess medicine market soon: Health adviser


Government will inspect the medicine market soon to verify the prices, Health and Family Welfare Adviser Maj Gen (Retd) ASM Matiur Rahman said yesterday.

He said this at a press briefing at his office after a report of the representatives of pharmaceutical companies said that they did not increase price of drugs since 1994.

However, the price has increased manifold over the years. So, the government will go for market assessment to see whether the information was correct or not, said the adviser.

Although the press briefing was organised to apprise the media about the Commonwealth Health Ministers' Meeting and 60th World Health Assembly, held in Geneva on May 13-23, the adviser talked a little on present situation of the medicine market.

Admitting that the Drug Administration has lacks in monitoring mechanism, he stressed the need for a reshuffle in the administration.

While highlighting the outcomes of Commonwealth Health Minister's Meeting and 60th World Health Assembly, Matiur said major agenda of the assembly were Avian and pandemic influenza, control of Leishmaniasis, polio, malaria, tuberculosis, evidence-based strategies and interventions to reduce alcohol-related harm, prevention and control of non-communicable diseases, oral health, universal coverage of maternal, newborn and child health interventions, health promotion in a globalised world, integrating gender analysis and actions into the work of WHO, workers' health and strengthening health information systems.

In the assembly, Bangladesh sought help for the maintenance of the electro-medical equipment and a biomedical workshop for the expensive equipment. It also sought support for providing training to doctors on emergency obstetric care, obstetric fistula management, and assistance for academic BCS course for the nurses and training of other technical health professionals, said the adviser.

Bilateral discussions also took place in the assembly with different countries for supporting the poor and to provide demand side financing, bio waste disposal initiative, border malaria and indoor residual spray, Kala azar and Filaria control and exchange of scientists between the countries.

Besides, discussions took place on public-private partnership on community health clinic and hospitals, he added.

"Bangladesh is the second highest fund recipient country in the world and receives around 200 million dollars. Following the advancement in different sides in health sector Global Fund has asked the country representatives to apply for getting the next term's allocation," he said.

Director General of Directorate General of Health Services Dr Shahjahan Biswas and Secretary Ehsanul Fattah were also present.
