Ex-MP Joynal Abedin Faruq arrested

Police yesterday detained former BNP lawmaker Joynal Abedin Faruk at Khilkhet in the capital. Acting on a tip-off, a team of plainclothes police officials from Detective Branch of police and Khilkhet Police Station intercepted the white Pajero jeep carrying Joynal Abedin Faruk, former lawmaker of Noakhali-1 constituency, in front of Lotus Kamal tower on Airport road in Nikunja-2 at 12:30pm and arrested him. The lawmaker was heading to attend a programme in the area. "We have been trailing the lawmaker since he absconded after filing of the cases against him. We arrested him under the Section 16(2) of emergency rules," said Officer-in-Charge of Senbagh Police Station in Noakhali Motiur Rahman, who led the operation. Joynal was kept in Cantonment Police Station as of 6:45pm and preparation was on to take him to Senbagh Police Station. Joynal is a charge sheeted accused in two cases with Senbagh Police Station -- one filed in February this year in connection with misappropriation of 96 pieces of corrugated iron sheet meant for relief and another filed on December 22, 2006 for creating disorder in normal life by putting barricade on road in front of the police station, police said. He is also an accused in an extortion case filed on April 6, 2007 and investigation into the case is going on.
