With the air buzzing with talks of bringing reforms to political parties Awami League (AL) is also planning to formulate policies reflecting the interests of people involved in different economic sectors, professional groups, and the impoverished classes aiming to make the party 'people oriented'.Thinking that now is the best time for getting close to the people of all sectors in the changed context, several AL leaders have been working to figure out a way for making the party policy oriented, which will reflect the interests of people involved in different economic sectors including agriculture and the garments industry. AL wants to use the changed situation, which put its archrival BNP in an apparently deep leadership crisis, to get closer to the people in order to prepare a comprehensive proposal for reforms in the party reflecting the people's interest. The AL leaders are preparing drafts on many issues, which will be placed at party forums when the party's central working committee (ALCWC) will be held immediately following the awaited lifting of the ban on indoor politics. A number of AL leaders told The Daily Star that AL President Sheikh Hasina is positively thinking about the issues and instructed them to work on those. Hasina, a former prime minister, already instructed different central, district, and upazila level leaders to go to the people in their respective constituencies to know their views and opinions on many issues. AL Organising Secretaries Saber Hossain Chowdhury, Mahmudur Rahman Manna, and Akhtaruzzaman, and several other mid-level leaders told The Daily Star that the AL chief clearly understands the necessity for reforms and is positive about bringing necessary reforms to the party. Hasina is also positive about adopting specific policies for people involved in different sectors and divided in different classes, they observed. The leaders said they are working on collecting data on different sectors and issues so that the party might be updated on those. Talking to The Daily Star Saber Hossain, also political secretary to the AL president, said now is the time to think about formulating the party's policies on impoverished people, people involved in different sectors including textile, on young professionals, labourers, and women among others, to push the party forward. "Policies will have to be formulated and there will be economic and development agendas specifically in the party policy because it's time to look forward," Saber said. However, another organising secretary, Mahmudur Rahman Manna, said they have plans to include the interests of people of all sectors in their party policy. "We will make some recommendations to party President Sheikh Hasina on these issues," he said adding that they have yet to finalise the specifics of the process of formulating the policies. "We have been working on these issues for several days," said Manna, a former student leader, adding that they will soon prepare a draft proposal on reforms and party policies and hand it over to the party chief. Another organising secretary, Aktharuzzaman, said they could not adopt any specific policy on improvised people including the farmers for the last 35 years. In the changed context, it is time to think about formulating policies on them, he said adding that they will speak about the issues in the ALCWC meeting after the ban on indoor politics is lifted.
