US foreign policy

This is reference to your recent news item, dated Sat. May 19, 2007 titled: 'US Wants to See Fully Functional Democracy in Bangladesh."

It appears that a sovereign nation like Bangladesh is "under consistent pressure" while we are "mending our own fences" whence the US fully backs the military-dictatorial regime in Pakistan!

Ever since Gen. Musharraf came to power in 1999 through a bloodless-coup, the US has provided him with unquestioned moral, economic, strategic, military and political support. Hence, the validation of a general's regime to serve US geo-political interests.

Our present government, on the other hand, led by a civilian, has been in power for a mere 120+ days. The CTG has clearly stated the objectives of its existence numerous times. Our nation needs a voter list free of anomalies as well as an eradication of corruption. The corrupt activities in our socio-economic, political arenas deserve a serious scrutiny and cleansing as well. Let the laws of our nation mete out justice. The activities of the present CTG backed by our military have earned the support of our masses overwhelmingly.

It is a well-known and well-accepted fact that unless the electoral process is thoroughly overhauled an early election will be fruitless. Why then this US anxiety and haste for our national elections before the nation is prepared for it? What is this brand of "Fully Functional Democracy?" Is this the same brand of democracy which the US has so adamantly tried to establish in Iraq, Afghanistan, Egypt and other countries?

The answer is to be found in the fact that a philosophy of duplicity in foreign policy will always fail to achieve the desired objectives.
