HC asks govt to permit ETV to air programme thru' satellite downlink

The High Court yesterday ordered the government to permit Ekushey Television (ETV), a local private channel, to air its programme through satellite downlink by cable operators. Responding to an application moved by the ETV management, a division bench of Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain and Syed Refaat Ahmed passed the order. The ETV went to High Court seeking remedy as cable operators stopped downlinking ETV programmes through satellite from Wednesday in response to a government notice. On Tuesday, the government issued a notification barring cable operators from airing unapproved TV channels through satellite. As the ETV has not been included in the list of 12 approved local TV channels, the cable operators refrained from downlinking ETV programmes. Barrister Shafique Ahmed and Advocate Mozammel Huq appeared for the ETV management.
