Road crashes kill 11, injure 63

At least 11 people were killed and 63 others injured in separate road accidents in Khulna, Brahmanbaria, Bogra, Comilla, Manikganj and Satkhira yesterday.Our staff correspondent from Khulna reports: Three people were killed and seven others injured in a road accident on Khanjahan Ali Bridge (Rupsha Bridge) under Khulna Sadar Police Station yesterday. The dead were identified as Shahidul, Hiru and Borhan. The injured now undergoing treatment at Khulna Medical College Hospital are Ashraf, Halim, Dipak, Shah Alam, Rony, Bashir and Julhas. The accident occurred when a Dhaka-bound passenger bus collided head-on with a fish fry-laden pick-up bound for Khulna Natun Bazar from Fakirhat upazila of Bagerhat at 5:30am. The bodies were sent to Fakirhat after autopsy at KMCH morgue. Police seized the bus while its driver managed to escape. Our Correspondent from Brahmanbaria adds: Two people were killed and 30 others injured in a road accident at Khariala under Ashuganj upazila in the district yesterday. The dead were identified as Shubha, 7, and his sister Rony, 11, of Kendua village of Kishoreganj district. According to police sources, a Sylhet-bound bus from Kishoreganj collided head-on with another bus bound for Dhaka from Sylhet, Shubha and Rony dead on the spot. The injured were sent to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital and Ashuganj clinics in critical condition. Meanwhile, one bicycle rider was killed in a road accident on Dhaka-Sylhet highway at Khatihata under Sadar Upazila in the district on Wednesday night. The dead identified as Shuhel Ahmed, 21, of Sarail, was going to Brahmanbaria riding his bicycle. The accident occurred when a bus knocked him down while he was crossing the Khatihata point at Khatihata on the road, leaving him injured seriously. He succumbed to his injuries on the way to hospital. UNB from Bogra adds: A truck rammed into tempo killing its two passengers and injuring six others at Sujabad in the outskirts of the town yesterday. Driver of the three-wheeler Binoy Mohanta, 50, of Genda and Umme Hilia Binte, 24, daughter of Ahmed Ali of Dohamuka village died on the spot. Police rescued the injured and admitted them to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in a critical condition. Another report from Comilla says: A man was killed and 15 others were injured in a head-on collision between two buses on Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Chauddgram upazila here yesterday. Witnesses said the accident occurred at about 5:00pm when a Munshirhat-bound bus from Chauddgram collided with another Noakhali-bound bus from Dhaka, leaving a passenger dead on the spot. The dead could not be identified immediately. Our Correspondent Manikganj adds: One person was killed and five others were injured in a road accident on Dhaka-Aricha highway in Manikganj in the early hours of yesterday. The victim was identified as Abdul Hakim of Gopalganj district. He was driver of the ill-fated truck. Saturia police said the accident occurred at around 4:00am at Golora area when the drivers of a Dhaka-bound night coach and fish-laden truck lost their control over the steering as the tried to cross each other and the two vehicles fell into the roadside ditch. The truck driver Abdul Hakim died on the spot. The injured were rushed to Manikganj Sadar Hospital from where Chunnu Mia was shifted to Dhaka Orthopaedic Hospital as his condition deteriorated. The body was sent to Manikganj Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy. Our Correspondent from Satkhira says: A man was crushed under the wheels of bus at Brajabaksa on Satkhira-Jessore road in Kalaroa upazila yesterday. The dead was identified as Abdul Hakim, 40 son of Kasim Uddin Biswas of Brajabaksa in Kalaroa upazila. Quoting local people police said a speeding bus from Jessore crushed Hakim while standing on the side of the road at Brajabksa Bazar as the driver lost his control over the steering, leaving him dead on the spot.
