Shamima Akhtar Liza lifted the Prime Bank 2nd Women's International Rating chess tournament crown with a match in hand even after a draw in the sixth round yesterday.After five straight wins, Liza shared points with Zakia Sultana to collect 5.5 points. Her nearest contender IWM Rani Hamid was on 4.5 points, closely followed by Zakia, Masuda Begum, Shamiha Sharmin Shimmi, Kishwara Shajrin Eva and Mimi Arjuman all on four points. GM CHESS The 8th United Insurance and United Leasing Grandmasters chess tournament will begin on May 27 at the Chess Federation hall-room. All Bangladeshi players above 2200 rating have been asked to send their entries for the competition, which is expected to be graced by GMs and IMs from India, Iran, Pakistan and Vietnam. DANONE CUP The final round of the Grameen-Danone Nations Cup kicks off today at the Bangabandhu National Stadium with six teams competing in two groups. The winners will represent the country in the Danone Cup to be held in France from June 29 to July 1. Dhaka, Jhenaidah and Khulna make Group A while the other group comprises of Chittagong, Chapaina-wabganj and Narayanganj. The final will be played on May 27. DU SWIMMING Golam Faruk of Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall and Abdul Halim of Sir AF Rahman Hall emerged joint champions in the Dhaka University Inter-hall swimming championship. Shahidullah Hall student Mahbubur Rahman finished runner-up. A total of 30 swimmers took part in seven events.
