Muggers shoot army officer's son dead

Unidentified criminals shot dead a youth in Dhanmondi in the capital yesterday morning and snatched Tk 4.45 lakh from him.

The dead is identified as AHM Arefin Alam Rusho, a fresh BBA graduate from North South University and son of Lt Col AHM Shafikul Alam and Lt Col Dr Ambory Begum of Mainul Hossain road in Dhaka Cantonment.

Accompanied by his would-be wife and father-in-law Joynal Abedin, Rusho withdrew the money from the Satmasjid Road branch of NCC Bank.

As the three came out of the bank at about 11:30am and was approaching their car parked in front of the bank, two muggers in a motorbike arrived the scene and tried to grab the briefcase containing the money from Rusho, witnesses said. Two more youths in another motorbike were guarding the criminals from a distance, they added.

As Rusho tried to resist the muggers, they shot him twice--in the head point blank and in the right hand--and made off with the briefcase.

He was rushed to Bangladesh Medical College and Hospital in Dhanmondi where the doctors declared him dead.

"None at home knew that Rusho went there as he left home in the morning saying that he was going to Uttara," said Shahid Hasan Ratan, a relative of the dead, over phone.

Joynal Abedin, who fell ill following the incident, filed a murder case with Dhanmondi Police Station accusing four unknown criminals.

High military officials visited Dhaka Medical College (DMC) morgue yesterday after the body was brought there for autopsy. Reporters were not allowed to enter the morgue premises.

None could be arrested as of early hours today although different teams of Dhanmondi patrol police and intelligence agencies were conducting operations in the city to capture the criminals.

"Significant improvement has been made in the investigation and the persons involved will be arrested soon," said investigation officer of the case Monwar Hossain, also officer-in-charge of Dhanmondi Police Station.

Meanwhile, a press release signed by Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Naim Ahmed yesterday said from now on city dwellers or organisations may take police escorts while depositing or withdrawing money or transferring money from one place to another.

The press release also advised people to contact nearby police stations or the Police Control Room by dialling 999 if needed.
