Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) yesterday claimed to have captured two members of the militant outfit "Jadid al Qaeda Bangladesh," who allegedly threatened to blow up the Jatiya Press Club earlier this month. One of them, Mohammad Ibrahim, was also a close accomplice of listed criminal Pichchi Hannan, who was killed in "crossfire" by Rab on August 6, 2004, says a Rab press release. The other arrestee was identified as Nawab Ali. They were being interrogated under the custody of Rab-3. Acting on a tip-off, Rab held Nawab from Karwan Bazar on Tuesday after Shahbagh Police Station sent a copy of the general diary filed by the press club authorities to the director of Rab-3, the press release added. Following information extracted from him, the Rab members arrested Ibrahim from Hizla in Barisal on Wednesday. The Rab also recovered the cellphone with SIM from his possession through which some callers identifying themselves as "Jadid al Qaeda" members threatened to bomb the Jatiya Press Club. On May 8, the press club authorities received a letter from the militant outfit that read "the press club will be blown up within 10 days." Besides, the threat was issued over cellphone several times. Shahin Choudhury, convenor of the security sub-committee of the press club, filed a general diary with the Shahbagh police the following day.
