National music conference brings Nazrul artistes together

A two-day national music conference organised by Nazrul Sangeet Shilpi Parishad (NSSP) started from May 22. The event marks the 108th birth anniversary of our National Poet, Kazi Nazrul Islam. The programme was held at the National Museum with the participation of NSSP members as well as eminent and upcoming artistes of the country.The first day of the conference featured solo renditions of Nazrul songs, recitation of poems written by the Rebel Poet and dance performances. At the inauguration, noted Nazrul researcher Professor Rafiqul Islam said, "Our culture is now facing serious threats imposed by aggressive globalisation. We can find ways to resist this aggression of elements that are alien to our culture by turning our focus on Nazrul's work." M A Mannan, the general secretary of Nazrul Sangeet Shilpi Parishad also spoke at the programme. On May 22, the programme started with a choral rendition of Jai hok, shantir jai hok that is also the slogan of the conference. It was followed by solo renditions of Nazrul songs. Ferdous Ara performed Prothom prodip jalo, Bipasha Guhthakurata rendered Khulechhe aaj, Shahin Samad rendered Bolo bondhuarey and Bulbul Mahalanabish performed Chokh gelo pakhire. Among others, Yasmin Mushtari, Nashid Kamal, Rahat Ara Giti, Chompa Bonik, Sanjay Kabiraj, Surupa Dhor, Ferdousi Rahman Chandan, Shahid Kabir Palash, Shahiduzzaman Mamun, Himanghshu Bishwas(Sylhet), Sharmin Rajib Chowdhury Tina(Chittagong), Sheikh Ali Ahmed and Nasima Akhter Moina(Rajshahi) sang at the programme. Shafi Kamal recited excerpts from Nazrul's poem Bidhrohi. Artistes from Rewaz Performers School staged dances based on Nazrul songs and poems. Munmun Ahmed choreographed the dances. Sujit Mustafa and Nasheed Kamal hosted the show. Yesterday NSSP honoured veteran Nazrul researcher Abdus Sattar and artiste Julhasuddin Ahmed for their contribution in promoting Nazrul songs.
