Road accidents kill 9, injure 23


At least nine people were killed and 23 others injured in separate road accidents in Keraniganj, Nilphamari, Satkhira and Khulna yesterday.

Our staff correspondent adds: Three unidentified three people were killed and five others injured when a passenger bus and human hauler collided head-on on the Dhaka-Mawa highway in Karaniganj yesterday.

The dead were a boy aged about 15, a girl aged about 13 and a man aged about 45. The injured were identified as Mainul, 40, Asad, 35, Mitu, 15, Opu, 10 and Avhi, 10.

The victims were passengers of the human hauler.

Local sources said, the accident occurred at around 6:00pm at the Ring Road area when a Dhaka-bound passenger bus and a Mawa-bound yellow hauler collided head-on.

Locals rushed the victims to the Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital where the on-duty doctors declared three dead.

UNB from Nilphamari adds: Three people were killed and 15 others injured when a bus fell into a roadside ditch in Syedpur upazila in the early hours of yesterday.

The dead could not be identified immediately.

Police and witnesses said the Dhaka-bound bus fell into the ditch near WAPDA intersection on Nilphamari-Rangpur highway at about 12:30am.

The injured were admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

Our correspondent from Satkhira reports: Two people, including an old day labourer, were killed yesterday in separate road accidents in the district.

The deceased were identified as Mohammad Selim, 28, son of Abdur Rashid of village Puratan Satkhira in the town and Abdul Gafur, 65, son of Fayez Uddin of village Kashempur in Shyamnagar upazila.

Quoting local people police said Selim was seriously injured when his motorcycle hit a roadside tree near Bangaler intersection in the town. The accident occurred when he was going to Kaliganj riding a motorcycle with high speed.

He was rushed to Satkhira Hospital. He was shifted to Khulna Hospital as his condition deteriorated where he succumbed to his injuries in the afternoon, Sadar Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Safiqur Rahman said.

A motorcycle knocked day labourer Abdul Gafur in the morning while he was going to work in a nearby cropland near Soalia bridge under Bhurulia union in Shyamnagar upazila, leaving him seriously injured.

He succumbed to his injuries on the way to Shyamnagar hospital, Shymanagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nawsher Ali said.

Our staff Correspondent from Khulna says: One person was killed and three others were injured in a road accident on Khulan-Jessore highway under Khanjahan Ali Police Station in the city early hours of yesterday.

The dead was identified as Amjad Uddin, 43, a businessman of Jhenaidah district. The injured were rushed to the Khulna Medical College Hospital.

The accident occurred when a onion-laden truck bound for Khulna Bazar from Jhenaidah turned upside down and fell into a ditch near Afil Jute Mills at Atra, leaving Amjaduddin dead on the spot.

Police seized the truck while its driver managed to escape.

Body of Amjaduddin was sent to his village home at Shailkupa upazila after autopsy.
