Form committees at dist, UZ levels to check corruption

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Chairman Lt Gen (retd) Hasan Mashhud Chowdhury yesterday called on the civil society members to form committees at district and upazila levels with neutral persons to make the ongoing drive against corruption a success. He also urged all to make all-out efforts to root out corruption from society. "There is no scope to surrender; we have to win the war against corruption," the ACC chief said at a view exchange meeting at the auditorium of Mymensingh Medical College (MMC). As part of his mission outside the capital, Lt Gen (retd) Hasan Mashhud visited Mymensingh and Tangail yesterday. Like other organisations, the ACC will conduct a survey to assess its performance, he told the meeting in Mymensingh. "Our aim is to stamp out corruption. Spontaneous participation of common people in the drive is crucial to its success," he said. "It won't be possible to eliminate corruption from the country by holding seminar and meeting. To eliminate it, we have to take a vow that each and every one of us will keep off corruption and build a strong resistance against corrupt people," Gen Mashhud said. Deputy Commissioner of Mymensingh Md Shamsul Haque, Police Superintendent Md Rafiqul Islam, Advocate Anisur Rahman, Prof Mokarram Hossain, Prof Afzalur Rahman Bhuiyan, Prof Dr Sayedur Rahman and Shamsul Alam Ponir attended the meeting. Our correspondent in Tangail adds: ACC Chairman Hasan Mashhud Chowdhury also exchanged views with civil society members, public representatives, journalists, lawyers and businessmen at Shilpakala Academy auditorium, urging all to wage an all-out movement against corruption across the country. "The problem has already been identified and we have started action against corrupt people. So, everybody should be aware of it and build resistance against corruption," he said. "The drive against corruption is a continuous process. The crackdown will continue until all the corrupt people are brought to book," he added. The ACC chief called upon all to be vocal against corruption from their respective positions. Tangail Deputy Commissioner Md Akhtar Ali Sarkar, Superindent of Police Sheikh Md Maruf Hassan, Tangail Chamber of Commerce President Abul Kashem, Government Prosecutor Khan Mohammad Khaled, Shamsuzzaman Khan, Alamgir Khan, Khandakar Ashrafuzzaman, Enamul Karim, Hosne-ara Baby and Sabuj Talukder attended the meeting.
