Budget to be placed before civil society on June 7

Finance Adviser AB Mirza Azizul Islam might place the budget for the coming fiscal before a gathering of fellow advisers, civil society members and journalists now that the parliament stands dissolved.

The function might be held on June 7, said sources in the finance ministry.

The government is considering the auditorium of National Economic Council or the International Conference Centre at the Chief Adviser's Office as the prospective venue, they added.

"We are discussing the prospective date, venue and other procedures regarding the budget placement," said a high official of the ministry. He said the decisions will be finalised after Mirza Aziz returns from a visit abroad on May 24.

He added that the officials are now busy preparing the adviser's budget speech.

During the tenure of the caretaker government in 1996, Prof Wahiduddin Mahmud had come up with a financial plan for three months and that was passed through an ordinance.

"But this time the interim administration will place a budget for the entire fiscal and have it approved through an ordinance," said a finance ministry source.

The adviser's speech will be broadcast live on radio and television while other materials and books concerning the budget will be posted on the government website.

"The finance ministry will compile suggestions on the proposed budget from economists, business bodies and different professional groups, and in the light of those the advisory council will bring necessary changes at the end of the month," the source added.
