Scarcity of drinking water
S. M. Shah Mahmood, Dept. of Urban and Rural Planning ,Khulna University
A huge quantity of water is available on our planet, almost 1500 million cubic cms, but most of it is useless for us as it contains too much of salt. Total amount of available fresh water on our planet is only 84.4 million cubic cms. So, it is clear that drinking water is very limited. The situation is critical for developing and under developing countries, including Bangladesh. In Bangladesh, water treatment plants are very limited. Only 26% rural people use tube-well water for all household activities. The flow of our rivers is gradually declining and salinity is on the rise. The planners have to address the water issue in all seriousness.
