A mobile court has started special drive against different malpractices like increasing seats and realising excessive fares at passenger buses in Chittagong. The drive titled 'Operation Protect Passengers' Rights' aims at checking harassment of passengers and other irregularities in buses of city service and inter-district routes. According to sources, some greedy bus owners are frequently increasing the number of seats exceeding the capacity approved by Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA). It narrows down the space between the rows of seats causing utter discomfort to the passengers of distant routes. Under the drive led by Magistrate Munir Chowdhury, the mobile court detained a good number of buses running between Chittagong and Comilla, Feni and Noakhali in the last few days. It fined the bus owners, compelled them to remove the additional seats and give undertaking that they will follow BRTA rules in future. Magistrate Munir said the drive will also continue to check collection of excessive fare and smoking inside the buses.
