Pak writings on 1971 attack to be published

A book containing writings of Pakistani writers about the then West Pakistan's attack on then East Pakistan in 1971 will be published simultaneously from Pakistan and Bangladesh within a few months, Ahmad Salim, a Pakistani writer said yesterday.

He said the book titled "Another Side of a Medal", which would be a compilation of writings by renowned Pakistani poets and writers during the 1971 and after the period will explain a lot about the thought of then Pakistani people who did not agree with the then Pakistani government atrocities on Bangladeshi people.

He said the book would be published within three to four months from now.

Salim, honourary coordinator of Saarc's South Asian Research and Resource Centre, who is currently visiting Bangladesh, was giving a lecture at a discussion at RC Majumdar Arts Auditorium of Dhaka University (DU). Unnayan Onneshan, a centre for research and action on development, organised the function.

The topic of his lecture was "Creative Responses in West Pakistan Regarding the Tragedy of 1971".

Zaheda Ahmed, professor of History department of DU, presided over the discussion while Chairman of Unnayan Onneshan Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir was present at the ceremony.

Former teacher of Karachi University Salim said during 1971 West Pakistan people were in the dark about what was going on in the East Pakistan due to false propaganda of the then military ruler of the Pakistan.

There are a good number of writings, including poems in various languages by renowned Pakistani writers protesting West Pakistani attack on East Pakistan, he said.

"But most of them were banned by the military ruler," he said.
