Undemocratic leadership led democracy to near-collapse
Says Mainul

Law Adviser Barrister Mainul Hosein yesterday said undemocratic politics and leadership have led the country's democracy towards near-collapse.

"This kind of politics can neither revive democracy nor protect it," Mainul said.

He was speaking at the publication ceremony of three books by Brig Gen (retd) Sakhawat Hossain on peace, development and security aspects of Bangladesh and its neighbouring countries.

Mainul said the caretaker government has been struggling to save the country from the political crisis and this requires "a reliable legal framework and political system so that the nation does not bog down in such crisis again".

He admitted that the common people are suffering a lot due to the price hike of essentials and that the government is struggling to keep the prices within the reach of the people.

The government has taken a number of initiatives to keep the prices under control, he said, adding that it is even considering giving scopes for whitening black money through paying tax and using that tax for the country's welfare.

Bangladesh Economic Association President Kazi Kholiquzzaman chaired the programme held at the National Press Club. Chief Election Commissioner ATM Shamsul Huda, former advisers to the caretaker government Mahbubul Alam and CM Shafi Sami, Abul Ahsan Chowdhury and journalist Zaglul Ahmed Chowdhury attended the ceremony.
