Sachin, Sourav hit tons in Ctg Test

Only 20 overs were possible on the second day of the first Test due to overnight drizzle and heavy rain in the morning, but that did not stop prolific India batsmen Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly from completing their centuries at the Chittagong Divisional Stadium yesterday. After waiting for more than six and a half hours, play on the second day began with the two overnight batsmen nearing their hundreds and they made no mistake to reach the milestones in front of their board president Sharad Pawar and other officials who arrived yesterday in the port city after being invited by their Bangladesh counterparts. Resuming the day on 295 for three, the visitors lost three more wickets before finishing the day on 384-six in 97 overs, having added 89 runs in 20 overs. Both Sachin and Sourav were dismissed immediately after reaching their centuries as India gave the clear indication to score runs quickly in a bid to make up for the lost time. Fast bowlers Shahadat Hossain and Mashrafe Bin Mortaza took the opportunity after the new ball was taken in the 82nd over to give Bangladesh some solace in the brief period of play. Soon after scoring his 13th Test hundred, which came after twelve innings, the left-handed former Indian skipper Ganguly top-edged a Mashrafe short ball that was pitched outside off-stump and was held sharply by a running Mohammad Rafique just behind the bowling end to end the 189-run fourth wicket partnership. Earlier, Ganguly took a cheeky single from another short delivery off the aggressive Shahadat to complete his ton in 165 balls that contained 13 boundaries and two big sixes. Then Tendulkar put another feather in his cap, as the highest Test century-maker pushed Mashrafe towards mid-on to complete his 36th hundred in his 136 appearances. During his 101-run knock, the master batsman clobbered nine boundaries in 169 balls. The right-hander was also dismissed in the same fashion as he chased an outside off-stump bouncer from Shahadat, only to hole out to Mohammad Ashraful in the covers. Ace Bangladesh left-arm spinner Rafique brought another success for the home team when he had debutant Ramesh Pawar bowled for seven but still there was the dashing Mahendra Dhoni at the crease with 36 runs to his name as he accelerated the India run rate. But there might have been one more wicket for the Tigers had Rajin Saleh taken a difficult catch of Dhoni, who was then on 26, at the deep square leg boundary when the right-hander hooked Shahadat. Rain is also expected today and tomorrow, which could further lengthen the wait of the players inside the confines of the dressing-room.
