3 die in train-truck collision


A train rammed a truck at an allegedly unattended level crossing in Boura of Patgram upazila in Lalmonirhat yesterday leaving three dead and injuring 11 others, two of them critically.

The dead were identified as Bajlar Rahman, 40, Fazlar Rahman, 45, of Fakirpara under Hatibandha upazila and Niamat, 40, of Sirajganj. All of them were cattle traders.

Police and eyewitnesses said the 456-down train from Patgram rammed the truck laden with cattle and a number of cattle traders at the crossing around 6:15am. Bajlar and Fazlar Rahman died on the spot while Niamat died at Rangpur Medical College Hospital at 1:00pm.

The injured were sent to Rangpur Medical College Hospital and the Upazila Health Complex of Patgram and Hatibandha. The injured at Rangpur Medical College Hospital told The Daily Star that the level crossing gate was open and there were no gatekeepers. The truck was knocked to a nearby ditch.

A team of officials from Lalmonirhat Railway Division office visited the spot at noon yesterday.
