Journalism deptt emerges champion


Mass communication and journalism department became champion of the TIB-CUDS Inter-Department Debate Competition that ended at Chittagong University yesterday.

The subject of the debate was 'Not terrorism but corruption makes the present world unstable'.

In another debate titled 'Corruption and not politics is the major hindrance to encouraging foreign investment in Bangladesh', Law department defeated finance and banking department.

Dr Syed Manzurul Islam, professor of English department of Dhaka University, was present as chief guest at the concluding session of the competition organised jointly by Chittagong University Debating Society (CUDS), Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) and Sachetan Nagorik Committee, Chittagong at the business faculty auditorium.

Dr K M Golam Mohiuddin, dean of business faculty, Dr Mahbubul Haq, associate professor of Bangla department and moderator of CUDS, Tajul Islam, president of CUDS and Abdus Samad Himel, general secretary of CUDS, spoke on the occasion.

As the speakers urged the youths to come forward in resisting corruption, around 800 students, present at the auditorium, vowed to fight corruption.

Debaters of 34 departments took part in the four-day-long competition where apart from parliamentary debate, open debate was also held.

Manzurul Islam and Shariful Abedin, former president of CUDS, performed as the speakers in the final round of the English and Bangla debate, says a press release.
