No more trade licence in residential areas

An inter-ministerial meeting yesterday decided that the government will not issue any new trade licences against addresses in Dhaka's residential areas.

The meeting also decided to remove all billboards that are hazardous to Dhaka city dwellers.

Another decision was to form a utility service commission, comprising all utility service providers in Dhaka, to provide one-stop service to city dwellers.

The inter-ministerial meeting at the ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) asked the Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) to prepare an annual plan of city-street-digging. The service providing agencies were also asked to submit their annual requirements of road digging.

Adviser to the LGRD Ministry Mohammad Anwarul Iqbal presided over the meeting where representatives of the ministries of power and energy, environment, and representatives of Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk), the DCC, and managing directors of Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Ltd and Dhaka Water and Sewerage Authority (Wasa) were present.

The DCC was also asked to monitor the street digging activities closely and take punitive actions against any officials found neglecting their duties in this regard. It was asked to check the plans of a building and its location before issuing trade licences against an applicant's address.

Meeting sources said the final decision regarding the utility service commission would be made after further negotiations with the ministries concerned and service providing agencies.

It was decided in the meeting that the maintenance responsibility of all drainage system in the capital would be given to Wasa. Currently some drainage systems are under the DCC, the meeting was told.

The Power Development Board was requested to ensure un-interrupted power supply to all traffic signals in the city. The meeting also asked the DCC to continue the Dhaka city beautification process.
