'Ajon': An Aamuk Theatre production
Ershad Kamol
Aamuk Theatre's production Ajon begins with hustle-bustle, where the actors are seen busy, harvesting during the month of Baishakh in a small village of Khagrachhari. The play features the colourful lifestyle of the Tripura community: their customs, festivals and more.As part of the ongoing theatre festival arranged by the Department of Theatre and Film of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA), Aamuk Theatre staged Ajon at the Experimental Theatre Stage on May 15. To engage the audience, director Rakesh Tripura has emphasised on the display of cultural traditions of the Tripuras. However, the play failed, as overly casual and at times unsure actors could not deliver a steady performance. Ajon, in Tripura language, by Lion Tripura, revolves around the family of Kantharam Tripura, a solvent widower. His daughter Maloti is in love with Takaray. Meanwhile, Sayabi, the tortured wife of an alcoholic Pamachan, seeks shelter from Kantharam. The play ends with Kantharam marrying Sayabi and Pamachan going to exile. To encourage district town-based theatre, BSA has arranged a weeklong theatre festival at the National Theatre Stage. Beginning on May 11, theatre troupes from Chandpur, Rangpur, Kurigram, Barguna, Khagrachhari, Bandarban and Maulvibazar are participating at the weeklong festival.
