On receipt of allegations of tender scam, misuse of power, corruption and toll collection, Jelal was arrested by members of the joint force at about 2 pm from the office room of BCC superintending engineer, said assistant police commissioner Hayatul Islam and Barisal Kotwali Police Station inspector Khorshed Alam.

He was handed over to police at about 4 pm after primary interrogation at the joint forces' camp, they said.

There is no case against Jelal with this police station, they said adding he would be sent to jail under Section 54 if members of the joint force did not lodge any specific case against him.

In Jhenidah, joint force arrested an Awami League (AL) leader from his Adarsha Para house in Jhenidah town.

Jhenidah Sadar thana AL general secretary ZM Rashidul Alam alias Rashid, also former chairman of Surat Union Parishad (UP), was arrested on Tuesday night on suspicion under Section 54, police said.

Later, members of the joint force handed over him to Sadar police on Wednesday.

Police said there is no specific case against the AL leader with any police station in Jhenidah. He would be sent to jail custody under Section 54 if the joint force did not lodge any specific case against him, police said.
