Charges framed against Huda, Nasir, Salahuddin

Separate Dhaka courts yesterday framed charges against detained former ministers Nazmul Huda, Mir Mohammad Nasiruddin, BNP lawmaker Salahuddin Ahmed and one of their family members in connection with two arms cases and a graft case filed with different police stations.Meanwhile, proceedings of a graft case against former state minister for labour and employment Aman Ullah Aman and his wife Sabera Aman, were adjourned until today following a time petition by defence lawyers. Another Dhaka court will frame charges on May 17 against former BNP lawmaker Nasiruddin Ahmed Pintu in an attempted murder case filed with Hazaribagh Police Station. CASE AGAINST HUDA Judge Mohammad Azizul Haq of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court rejected a discharge petition filed by Huda's lawyers and framed charges against him. Huda pleaded not guilty and demanded justice before the court after the charges were read out to him. The court fixed May 23 for trial of the case and summoned complainant and other witnesses to appear on the scheduled date. Dhanmondi police on April 10 pressed charges against Huda for possessing illegal firearms and ammunition. The joint forces arrested the former minister on February 4 and seized a revolver, 14 bullets, a huge amount of local and foreign currencies, four passports and a cellphone from his Dhanmondi home. CASE AGAINST SALAHUDDIN The same court yesterday rejected a discharge petition and framed charges against detained former BNP lawmaker Salahuddin of Demra in an arms case. Moving the discharge petition, defence lawyers argued that their client was implicated in the case as part of a conspiracy to harass him. So, he should be discharged from the case. Opposing the discharge petition, the prosecution prayed for framing charges against the lawmaker. Salahuddin pleaded not guilty and demanded justice before the court after the court read out the charges brought against him. The joint forces on February 4 seized weapons and foreign currencies along with nine diplomatic passports and eight other Bangladeshi passports, 23 cellphones, videocassettes, compact discs (CDs) and a shotgun licence during a raid to arrest the former lawmaker at his house in the capital. CASE AGAINST NASIR Rejecting the discharge petition of Mir Nasir and his son barrister Mir Helal, Judge AK Roy of the Second Special Court framed charges against them in connection with a graft case. The defence lawyers submitted a discharge petition and made submissions on it to relieve their clients from the charges while the prosecution opposed it and prayed for framing charges against them. Nasir and his son pleaded not guilty and demanded justice before the court after the charges were read out to them. The court then fixed May 20 for trial of the case. Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) deputy directors (DDs) Sharmin Ferdousi and Abdullah Al Zahid, also the investigation officers (IOs) of the case, submitted the charge sheet of the case filed against Nasir and his son Helal with Gulshan Police Station on March 6. According to the charge sheet, the two accused accumulated assets worth over Tk 24.39 crore illegally. Helal also transferred Tk 2.83 crore from different bank accounts following his father's arrest, the IOs added. CASE AGAINST AMAN Judge Firoz Alam of the First Special Court fixed today for the hearing on charge framing against former state minister Aman and his wife Sabera in a case filed in connection with amassing huge wealth through illegal means. The court adjourned the hearing, as Aman's wife Sabera was not produced before the court due to her illness. ACC DDs Abdullah Al Zahid and Jibon Krishna Roy, also the IOs of the case, submitted the charge sheet of the case filed against Aman and his wife Sabera with Kafrul Police Station. In the charge sheet, the IOs said Aman and his wife amassed properties valued over Tk 10 crore illegally. The IOs said there are discrepancies between income and expenditure of the former BNP state minister. He also accumulated huge wealth through abuse of power. The DDs accused Sabera of giving false information in her statement to the anti-graft body. CASE AGAINST PINTU Another Dhaka court yesterday fixed May 17 for hearing on charge framing against Nasiruddin Ahmed Pintu in an attempted murder case. Second Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Abdus Salam Miah directed the jail authorities concerned to produce Pintu on the scheduled date. The case was filed on January 25 in connection with attempting to murder BNP activist Kabir on June 26, 2005. On May 6, the IO of the case pressed charges against him. On February 15, Pintu was sent to jail after he surrendered before the court and sought bail.
