30 bullet-hit as rival villagers clash in Sylhet

At least 30 people including two women were bullet-hit in a clash between two rival groups at Sadipur village in Jagonnathpur upazila in Sunamganj district yesterday over construction of a culvert.

Twenty of the injured were admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital and the rest at Jagonnathpur Upazila Health Complex.

Police said there had been a long standing dispute over a kutcha road at the village. Some people had an exchange of words over when the Union Parishad chairman tried to construct a culvert on the road Saturday.

In a sequel to the quarrel, rival groups belonging to Bahar Miah and Kala Miah clashed yesterday morning, both using lethal weapons including guns. At least 20 shots were traded during the clash, locals and police said.

Police have deployed at the remote village, which has no road link with the upazila headquarters.

The rival groups were preparing to file cases, police said. None was arrested when the report was filed yesterday afternoon.
