Women's star Newton quits

England women's cricket vice-captain, Laura Newton, will retire from the game immediately, it has been announced.

The 29-year-old said: "It has been an extremely difficult decision.

"But the demands of being an England cricketer require a sacrifice I am no longer able to undertake from this point onwards."

The Lancashire opening batsman represented her country in 13 Tests and 73 one-day internationals. A new vice-captain will be announced later.

Newton added: "It seems like a highly appropriate time to leave because a new coach is coming in and it gives someone else the opportunity to play cricket for England."
