Govt committed to enact right to information act

Law Adviser Mainul Hosein yesterday said the caretaker government is fully committed to enact the Right to Information Act.He also laid emphasis on reviewing and analysing similar acts of other countries including the US and the UK. The adviser made the comments when a five-member delegation of a core group met him and submitted a draft law prepared on the basis of a working paper prepared by the Law Commission in 2002. Before preparing the draft, the core group held discussions in the divisional headquarters with different civil society groups, experts, lawmakers, human rights activists and media professionals. The Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF) is facilitating and coordinating with the civil society members to raise awareness regarding formulation of the act. The delegation member include Sultana Kamal, former adviser to the caretaker government, Atiur Rahman, chairman of Unnayan Shamunnay, Shaheen Anam, executive director of the MJF, barrister Tanjib ul Alam and Iftekharuzzaman, executive director of Transparency International Bangladesh. They felt that enactment of the law would bring positive changes in the lives of people and pave the way for a democratic state.
