Global warming

Climatologists are of the view that the temperature of the earth is on the rise. It is said that the gradual increase of temperature --1.5 to 2 degree Celsius over the period of several decades --will spell disaster for the low-lying areas, including Bangladesh. Extreme spells of drought, erratic rainfall, devastating cyclones --all these are the likely effects of the phenomenon called global warming. Again, the rise of the sea-level may result in the inundation of the coastal areas of our country--a dire prediction indeed. Certainly, these events will jeopardize the lives and livelihood of the masses who inhabit those areas.Although it is the industrially developed west that is responsible for the emission of the greenhouse gases, the consequences will affect the third world countries more. These countries are already beset with numerous problems. In this regard the US, whose citizens on an average burn the highest amount of fossil fuel, can play an active role. After all, they are also the denizens of the planet and are not immune from the adverse effects of climate change.
