Toll demand from Chandpur doctors


Outlawed Purbo Banglar Communist Party (PBCP) cadres allegedly demanded Tk 2 lakh toll from four doctors at Chandpur 200-bed Sadar Hospital each for treatment of their wounded activists, civil surgeon (CS) office sources said.

The doctors are residential medical officer (RMO) Dr Shah Jamal, chief surgeon Dr Shahadat Hossain, medicine consultant Dr Saleh Ahmed and medical officer (MO) Dr S Alam Siddiquee.

The RMO said he got a call over cell phone on May 1. The caller identifying himself as PBCP commander Harun-or- Rashid threatened to kidnap and kill his daughter or son in case of non-compliance.

Dr Shahadat and two other doctors narrated similar story. All the doctors of the hospital and their family members are passing days in great panic, RMO said.

A general diary (GD) was filed with local police station in this regard.
