Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police AKM Shahidul Haque yesterday said police across the 16 northern districts have been put on maximum alert against the threats by new militant outfit Zadid al Qaeda responsible for the near-simultaneous explosions in three railway stations on May 1. He said all the 132 police stations and hundreds of police outposts and investigation centres have been asked to instantly respond to reliable information regarding militant activities and engage special intelligence forces to combat terrorism. "We are holding frequent meetings with NGO activists and different religious groups to assure them of taking adequate security measures. We will not allow any fanatics to raise its ugly head in Rajshahi again," the divisional police chief said while exchanging views with editors of local dailies and newsmen of electronic media, national dailies and news agencies at the DIG's conference room. He said that a security plan has been taken up to ensure security of NGO activists and Kadiyanis and that the police were asked not to harass any innocent persons. Replying to a question, the DIG, however, said the police in Rajshahi division are yet to trace any foreign or other sources of funds for the militants. "We have sent some arrested militants to Taskforce Interrogation Cell in Dhaka," he said. About the patrons of the militants, the DIG said, "It is difficult to find out evidence against them, but the police have already submitted two charge sheets against such abettors." He said that a security plan has been taken up to ensure security of NGO activists and Kadiyanis and that the police were asked not to harass any innocent persons. Additional DIG Mahbub Mohsin and Rajshahi SP Didar Ahmed were also present at the meeting.
