Ex-health minister Mosharraf sued for extortion

Former health minister Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain and six others were sued yesterday for extorting Tk 15,000 and demanding Tk 50,000 more from an activist of Awami League (AL).

Mohammad Abul Hossain of the city's Jatrabari area lodged the case with the Metropolitan Magistrate's Court.

Magistrate ABM Abdul Fattah directed the officer-in-charge (OC) of the Paltan Police Station to register the complaint as an FIR (first information report) on investigation into the matter.

The other accused are Mohsin alias 'Goru Chora' Mohsin, Delwar Hossain alias Dilu, Mostafa, Awal, Abul Kalam alias Chowdhury and Titu.

In his complaint, Abul Hossain, a distributor of multi-level marketing company Destiny 2000 Pvt Ltd, said Mosharraf had long been bearing a grudge against him, as he (complainant) is an AL activist and had worked for the party in the last general election.

The ex-minister's accomplices took him to the BNP office at Paltan as he got out of his Kakrail office at around 5:00pm on June 15 last year. They gave him a severe beating and demanded Tk 50,000.

Abul's brothers Hasan and Jahangir gave the gang Tk 15,000. But Mosharraf's men told them they would have to pay Tk 10,000 a month if they were to run businesses in the area.

The complainant was even denied treatment at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on orders from the then health minister.

He did not file any case against them for fear of retribution, Abul Hossain said.

Advocate Shamsul Haq Rintu appeared for the complainant.

EXTORTION CHARGES AGAINST SALAHUDDIN
Another Dhaka court yesterday framed charges against detained former BNP lawmaker from Demra Salahuddin Ahmed and seven others in two extortion cases.

The cases were filed under the Speedy Trial (Law and Order Disruption) Act with Jatrabari and Demra Police Stations on February 14 and 18.

The other accused are Abul Hashem, Salu, Bareq, Nurul Haq, Joynal Abedin, Jamaluddin Tutul and Mithu. Of them, Salahuddin and Mithu are now in jail while the rest are still at large.

Salahuddin and Mithu pleaded not guilty after Metropolitan Magistrate MA Salam of the Speedy Trial Court-6 had read out the charges against them.

In the Jatrabari case, Salahuddin and three others were accused of extorting Tk 3 lakh from a cattle trader on different dates in 2004 and 2006.

In the other case, Salahuddin and four of his men were charged with taking Tk 5 lakh from a person in Demra between October 2001 and November 2004.

CASE AGAINST MAMUN
The investigation officer (IO) of the Tk 2.40 crore extortion case against Giasuddin Al Mamun yesterday sought a court's permission to seize different bank cheques given by the complainant of the case.

IO Sub-Inspector (SI) Kazi Mainul Islam said he thinks those cheques could be vital to prove the charges against Mamun and others.

CASE AGAINST ABDUL QAYYUM
Metropolitan Magistrate Shamsul Alam yesterday placed Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) Ward Commissioner Abdul Qayyum on a two-day fresh remand in an attempted murder case.

The case was filed with the Badda Police Station in February.

The order came when Qayyum was produced before the court for hearing on a 10-day remand prayer.

Earlier on March 11, he was taken on a two-day remand in the same case.
