Changes in rules soon to make scope for filing bail prayers

The caretaker government has decided to make fresh changes in the Emergency Power Rules-2007 so that the accused barring those in the graft cases could appeal for bail.

The amended emergency power rules will come into effect after 10 days since issuance of the gazette. The gazette is likely to be issued within two or three days.

"We have decided to amend the emergency power rules considering the overall condition and to reduce the problems of people. Any accused except for those in the corruption cases will be able to file bail petition under the amended rules," said Law Adviser Mainul Hosein in an interview with BBC yesterday evening.

He also said there will be no changes in the restriction on applying for or granting bail in graft cases filed by Anti Corruption Commission (ACC).

The amendment to the rules will be effective after ten days from publication of the gazette, he added.

On March 21, the government amended the emergency powers rules, suspending the rights to appeal for bail and seek redress from any higher court until a case is resolved in trial court.
