More relief goods seized from BNP, Jamaat men's houses

The joint forces yesterday arrested Dinajpur bureau chief of the daily Inqilab and a Jubo Dal leader in Satkhira and recovered 340 corrugated iron (CI) sheets meant for relief from the houses of local BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami leaders.Police and Rapid Action Battalion arrested 1,442 people including 793 wanted criminals, 25 convicts and four accused under Arms Act in 24 hours ending at 6:00am yesterday, home ministry sources said. Members of the armed forces arrested 47 people including 19 criminals during the same period. In Dinajpur, law enforcers arrested Mahfuzul Haque Anar, bureau chief of the Inqilab from his office at Jail More yesterday morning. There are allegations of massive corruption, abuse of power and tender manipulation against him. He was sent to jail with one month's detention. In Satkhira, the joint forces on Sunday night arrested local Jubo Dal leader Nazrul Islam, who is also a top listed criminal in the area and a close associate of former BNP MP Habibul Islam Habib, from Kazirhat Bazar in Kalaroa upazila. Accused in at least 13 cases, he faces charges for robbery, extortion, mugging, land grabbing and attacking journalists who went to Kalaroa to cover news of the then leader of the Opposition Sheikh Hasina on August 30, 2002. In Rangpur, the joint forces recovered 94 CI sheets from the Sarderpara house of Upazila Statistics Officer Moinul Islam yesterday morning. They also recovered 46 CI sheets from the house of Khalilur Rahman, general secretary of Mitipur union unit of the Jatiya Party and 16 sheets from the house of Kumodpur UP Chairman Mozammel Hoque. Police yesterday recovered 27 CI sheets from the shop owned by Nagarghata UP Jamaat Ameer Mehedi Hasan at Nagarghata village in Tala upazila. They also recovered 24 CI sheets from local Zia Parishad office at Kamarali in Kalaroa upazila and 25 sheets from the possession of local BNP leader Abdur Razzak of Komorpur village. The police recovered 27 CI sheets used in the shop owned by Sonabaria UP Jamaat Ameer Maulana Sirajul Islam at Sonabaria Bazar in Kalaroa upazila. The joint forces recovered 42 CI sheets from an organisation formed by Mathureshpur union BNP General Secretary Abu Toha at Nijdevpur village and a shop of Rawshan Ali of village Burdhaman in Kaliganj upazila. In Narayanganj, the joint forces arrested former UP chairman Daud Molla, who faces six criminal cases, from court area on Sunday afternoon.
