The joint forces arrested barrister Amir Helaluddin, son of former state minister Mir Nasiruddin, and handed him over to the Gulshan Police Station. Gulshan police filed a general diary (GD) against Babul yesterday accusing him of anti-state activities, causing financial loss to the country and illegally grabbing public and private properties.

Under tight security Gulshan police produced Babul, owner of Bangla daily Jugantor, before the Court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate at 3:00pm with a proposal for a one-month detention from the home ministry.

The detained business tycoon may face a one-month detention in jail as a proposal is pending for court's decision.

In the forwarding report, police said Babul had been running his real estate business by illegally occupying public and private land. So, he should be confined to jail custody to prevent him from doing such activities.

The defence lawyers submitted a bail petition saying Babul does not possess any government and private land. He was implicated in the case as part of a conspiracy to harass him, the lawyers added.

Police detectives arrested Babul soon after he came out of Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) on Thursday after submitting his wealth statement.

He is on the ACC's list of 50 people whom the commission have asked to submit their wealth statements within 72 hours of being notified. However, only five persons--four in person and a relative of a detainee--have submitted their statements on Thursday.

Considering the weekend, Friday and Saturday, the ACC's 72-hour deadline for submitting wealth statements expires tomorrow evening.

Sources said the government, by seeking permission from magistrates, will initiate the process from Monday to seize, attach or freeze moveable and immovable properties of those who failed to submit their wealth statements.
