Wadud's palatial house seized, Babul sent to jail


Police took control of the luxurious house of former BNP lawmaker Wadud Bhuiyan in Khagrachhari yesterday and joint forces recovered more relief materials from different places in the country.

Meanwhile, arrested Chairman of Jamuna Group Nurul Islam Babul was sent to Jail.

The joint forces arrested barrister Amir Helaluddin, son of former state minister Mir Nasiruddin, and handed him over to the Gulshan Police Station. They also arrested Jahangir Alam, Daudkandi upazila Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal president and brother-in-law of BNP leader Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, early yesterday.

Police headquarter at a press release said they recovered firearms, nine other arms and one cocktail-bomb and 15 bullets within the last 24 hours preceding 6:00am yesterday. They have also arrested a total of 1,699 people on various charges.

Arrested Chairman of Jamuna Group Nurul Islam Babul was sent to Dhaka Central Jail yesterday on charges of anti-state activities and illegally possessing public and private properties.

Gulshan police filed a general diary (GD) against Babul yesterday accusing him of anti-state activities, causing financial loss to the country and illegally grabbing public and private properties.

Under tight security Gulshan police produced Babul, owner of Bangla daily Jugantor, before the Court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate at 3:00pm with a proposal for a one-month detention from the home ministry.

The detained business tycoon may face a one-month detention in jail as a proposal is pending for court's decision.

In the forwarding report, police said Babul had been running his real estate business by illegally occupying public and private land. So, he should be confined to jail custody to prevent him from doing such activities.

The defence lawyers submitted a bail petition saying Babul does not possess any government and private land. He was implicated in the case as part of a conspiracy to harass him, the lawyers added.

Police detectives arrested Babul soon after he came out of Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) on Thursday after submitting his wealth statement.

He is on the ACC's list of 50 people whom the commission have asked to submit their wealth statements within 72 hours of being notified. However, only five persons--four in person and a relative of a detainee--have submitted their statements on Thursday.

Considering the weekend, Friday and Saturday, the ACC's 72-hour deadline for submitting wealth statements expires tomorrow evening.

Sources said the government, by seeking permission from magistrates, will initiate the process from Monday to seize, attach or freeze moveable and immovable properties of those who failed to submit their wealth statements.

The joint forces arrested barrister Amir Helaluddin, son of former state minister for civil aviation Mir Nasiruddin, and handed him over to Gulshan Police Station yesterday.

He was arrested under Emergency Power Ordinance at his Gulshan residence. Police, however, did not say when he was arrested.

"Baithak", the luxurious home of former lawmaker Abdul Wadud Bhuiyan, was seized by a special team of district administration, our Khagrachhari correspondent reports.

Police sources said after a three-day assessment, different government bodies including the ACC, National Board of Revenue (NBR) requested the district administration to handover the house to Khagrachhari police. The police seized some relief material at his house and made a list of other valuables and goods. Nobody was allowed to enter the house without permission from the administration, sources said.

Earlier, police arrested former lawmaker Wadud Bhuiyan from Khagrachhari. They also seized his BMW x5 at the house of Mohammed Mahfuz, a close aide of Wadud Bhuiyan.

Our Jhenidah Correspondent reports: A case was lodged with the Maheshpur Police Station against former BNP lawmaker Shahidul Islam in connection with grabbing relief materials. Abdus Salam, office-in-charge of Maheshpur Police Station, said the ACC would look into the case.

Policed seized 18 pieces of corrugated iron (CI) sheets, property of the relief department, at Zia Smrity Sangshad's at Krishanpur in the Sadar upazila, our Chandpur correspondent reports.

Our Khulna correspondent reports: Police arrested a BNP ward leader, Alamgir Hossain, at his residence at Khalishpur Navy Gate Thursday night. Police seized 38 pieces of CI sheets of the government relief department.

Police sources claimed they were looking for Alamgir in connection with several allegations of corruption and other crimes.

Our Satkhira correspondent reports: The army-led joint forces Thursday night arrested a regional leader of the outlawed Purba Banglar Communist Party (PBCP)-Janajuddha faction who is also a top criminal of the district.

Police sources said acting on a tip off, the joint forces raided a shrimp enclosure at Mashiadanga in Assassuni upazila and arrested him where he had been hiding since the promulgation of state of emergency.

He is wanted in connection with at least 12 cases, including six murder cases, filed with Tala, Patkelghata, Paikgachha and Assassuni police stations.

Our Netrakona correspondent reports: Kendua police recovered 36 pieces of relief department's CI sheets at the house of Nowapara Union Parishad (UP) Member Renu Akhter Thursday night.

Police arrested Renu and filed a case with Kendu Police Station in this connection. Police sent Renu to the court and the court rejected her bail prayer and sent her to jail.

Joint forces in a pre-dawn raid in Bandarban town yesterday arrested Ranglai Mro, a UP chairman, along with a number of arms and ammunition at his house at Ujanipara in Bandarban, our Rangamati correspondent reports.

The seized arms and ammunition: one pistol, one rifle, 23 bullets of AK-47 rifle and 12 cartridges.

The joint forces arrested Jahangir Alam, Daudkandi upazila Juba Dal president and brother-in-law of BNP central leader Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, early yesterday, UNB reports.

Police said he was arrested on different charges including forcing patients to buy medicine from his pharmacy.

Three people including a couple were arrested as a factory for adulterating Phensidyl, a contraband drug, was unearthed at a house in Canelghat near Daulatdia ferry terminal yesterday morning.

The arrestees were identified as Babul Hawlader, 35, of Barisal his wife Selina Begum, 20, and maternal cousin Sahidul Islam, 40, UNB adds.

Police and joint forces in separate drives, seized 88 pieces of relief department's CI sheets in Thakurgaon on Thursday and yesterday.

Acting on tip-off, police raided the house of Organising Secretary of Sadar upazila BNP Motiur Rahman Moti at Barunagaon Friday noon and recovered 19 relief CI sheets.

In another drive, the joint forces, led by Magistrate Manjurul Alam Prodhan, seized 69 relief CI sheets at Danarhat Ansaria Jubo Sangha in Thakurgaon sadar Thursday afternoon.
