Detained ex-MP Salahuddin sued for extortion, land grabbing


At least five cases were filed against detained former BNP lawmaker from Dhaka-4 constituency Mohammad Salahuddin and several of his "associates" with two police stations in the city.

Extortion and land grabbing cases were filed against them Wednesday evening with Jatrabari and Shyampur police stations under Special Powers Act, police said.

Owner of a compressed natural gas (CNG) filling station Haji Kafil Uddin filed a case with Shyampur Police Station claiming Salahuddin, Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) Commissioner Abu Rashed Badsha and three others have been occupying a piece of land he owns on Muradpur Madrasa Road since 2005.

He also said when he was filling the mentioned land with earth Salahuddin demanded Tk 20 lakh as toll and when he refused to pay Salahuddin threatened with life. Later, Kafil was ousted from his land and a signboard was put on the land mentioning Abu Rashed's wife as the owner of the land.

Kafil claimed in his case that he wanted to file a case then but police refused to record any case against Salahuddin.

Jatrabari police said four locals of Jatrabari area filed four cases against the former lawmaker and a number of his "associates" accusing them of extortion and occupying their land.

Officer-in-Charge of Jatrabari Police Station Ahsan Habib told The Daily Star, "Two of the cases accuse Salahuddin of extortion while the rest two were filed in connection with grabbing others' land."

Police said they received may phone calls from locals who said they wanted to file cases against Salahuddin and his "associates".
